Hi, I've just installed VA2451 (Build 2022.2) and I can see no VA icons on the toolbar in VS2022 Enterprise (version 17.1.2, in Spanish). This is what I get:

Ok, I've just updated Visual Studio, and now I see the icons... |

Thanks for following up. Before you updated VS and the issue resolved, did you try opening a solution? Did you have VA previously installed on this copy of VS? |

Hi, I have the same problem with the empty toolbar in Visual Studio Enterprise 2022 (64-bit) Version 17.0.5 when VA2451 is installed. At the moment we are not able to update to a newer VS-Version. My previous VA was 10.9.2443.0 built 2022.01.21 Uninstall, and installation of VA doesn't help. The restart of the VS, PC, and reload of the sln doesn't help. Any other suggestions? |

Which OS are you using?
I have just installed VS2022 Enterprise version 17.0.5 under Windows 10, on a machine with no instances of the IDE at all, and then installed first VA 2443 and then VA 2451.
Loading a new, default C++ solution both versions of VA show the toolbar icons correctly for me.
So this problem doesn't automatically happen with this version of VS2022, which is something.
Can you please try making a new, default C++ solution and see if you still see this problem, just in case this is somehow solution specific.
How are you loading the IDE? Are you double clicking on a SLN file? Passing any command line arguments to the IDE?
Can you please export your VA and IDE settings and send them to me:
VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings IDE tools menu -> Import and Export Settings -> Export selected environment settings
I can then import them here and see if I can reproduce the problem.
Please send me the files via email:

AlfredS, please try running devenv.exe /setup. It requires elevated privileges. It should reset your VS caches and allow the icons to be loaded in. It should not modify your settings. |

Did not solve anything for me.
Visual Studio 2022 Community 17.2 VA2451
No icons. Same issue the OP has, nothing helped. After reinstalling VA2451 completely the icons are visible, by starting the VS IDE the next time they are gone. |

I wonder if the fact that the icons worked on the first load is a clue.
How are you loading the IDE? Are you passing any command line switches? Double clicking on a solution file?
Do you have any other extensions installed? It is possible that there is an interaction going on with another extension if you do. |

Have you tried the /setup as Chris have suggested to AlfredS? If so, that could help us to find the reason. Currently I have some changes that could fix the problem, but we are unable to reproduce the issue. |

I have the same problem that I can fix with 'devenv /setup'. The icons, however, disappear every time I reboot the computer. Here is the info: VA_X64.dll file version 10.9.2451.0 built 2022.04.30 DevEnv.exe version 17.2.32526.322 Enterprise msenv.dll version 17.0.32526.225 Comctl32.dll version 6.10.22000.120 Windows 10 10.0 2009 Build 22000.708 16 processors (x86-64) Language info: 1252, 0x409 |

Thank you for the update. This coming back on reboot is really surprising. I am currently trying to reproduce this here, using the installed components of someone else who sees this problem a lot, so I will try rebooting as well, as I test this, to see if it helps to trigger the problem.

tkontos, if you have the time to try, could you please try rebooting Windows into safe mode next time you restart, and then loading VS2022, to see if this also causes the icons to go black? If you are not sure how to do this, this page explains the process:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234
I am still searching for clues to try and explain why some people are seeing this problem a lot, while others don't see any sign of it. |

So far I cannot reproduce this problem. tkontos, are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11? VA about says Windows 10, but the version number suggests Windows 11.
Are you aware of anything "odd" or "unusual" about your system that might help to explain why you are seeing this problem? Several of our users are reporting it, but I am wondering if there is a trigger, perhaps related to some other tool you have installed, the version of Windows, or something else? I am just looking for clues at the moment. |

I don't see the problem anymore after I installed the Win11 22H2 release preview. BTW I never saw the problem on my notebook computer running the released Win11 |

Thank you for the update, and I am glad to hear that the problem is now fixed. This almost suggests that the trigger could lay outside of Visual Studio, but certainly doesn't prove that theory. |

I spoke too fast. The problem re-appeared and it is not related to a reboot. Just re-starting the studio caused the problem. |

I am sorry to hear that, it was nice to think that a Windows update might have fixed things, and it even made a strange form of sense.
Can you please try closing VS2022 and then loading "Visual Studio Installer". On the entry for VS2022 there is the "More" pull down list button. Under this button can you please try "Repair", and see if this makes any difference?
If this doesn't help, can you please get VS2022 to log its startup, loading the IDE normally and seeing the problem. This is done with the command:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Enterprise\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /log c:\src\vs2022log.xml
if you don't specify the path for the log file you have to go digging for it, so specifying a path makes it a bit easier. Please send me the log file via email:

I think Microsoft might have fixed this on their side in VS 17.9. I'm still using an older version of Visual Assist and I had to run devenv /setup before launching Visual Studio to get the Visual Assist icons in the toolbar. But lately, since 17.9, or 17.9.1, the icons are there every time without the need for devenv /setup... |

Interesting, thank you for the update. We released a fix for the main version of this problem a few versions of Visual Assist ago, but it is still nice to think that there has been a fix from Microsoft as well. |

I spoke too fast. The icons desappeared again... So it seems like MS did not fix it... |

Yes, I know... But right now I'm running on an older version... At some point I will probably update it, but since I have to do it with my own money, since my company won't pay for it, I have to space the updates a bit longer... Anyway, thanks! |
