Hi guys,
I'm looking to deploy Visual Assist using a silent installation method. I have gotten the application to install silently with no problems, however I'm looking to also license the application silently.
Can you let me know if this is possible or what registry keys I need to put our license data into? I've found a reference to the license in HKCU/Software/Whole Tomato/Visual Assist X/ but the "key" value remains empty?
Thanks, Craig |

Thanks,
That worked well. What about silent uninstalls? |

I don't think there is a process for silent uninstalls. Is there any particular reason why you would want to uninstall VA silently?
You could try telling VA not to load via a registry key. Not quite the same thing, but it might do what you want:

Hi,
I'm also trying to silently install. Any help available?
Is there a reason why we can't just post the solution on this board to make it available to everyone?
Thanks. |

pa99 I have just emailed you about this.
One reason for not posting the solution on the board is that a silent install of VA does not show the licence agreement. So you will never see and agree / disagree with the licence agreement when doing a silent install. |

I understand the concern. However bear in mind that most major enterprise applications allow you to skip the license agreement, so there is precedent for allowing this. They must have figured out the legal way to make sure they are still protected, so perhaps a little inquiry is in order for your legal people. |

Hi guys,
Just downloaded the 1827 release for testing/deployment and found that the silent installation options are no longer working with the new combined installer?
Thanks, Craig |

Same result here. New build doesn't work with silent options. |

Which IDE's do you have installed, and which OS are you using?
Does the installer actually run at all?
Silent install works for me, so I am not sure why you are seeing problems. |

I've gotten it to work. You should add something to the automated installation page that references the fact you have to have an IDE already installed in order for the silent option to work. That was my issue.
Thanks. |

OS is Windows XP SP2 (and one case is SP3) VAX version is 1827 IDE is Visual Studio 2008 Standard SP1
The command line being executed is...
.\\VisualAssist\\VA_X_Setup1827.exe
I already have the IDE installed in the three instances I've tested this already as this is an upgrade from 1823 for us rather than a fresh install if thats any help?
I've now tried a fresh install and its still not working correctly.
Just to clarify, its specifically the silent installation options that are failing to work, when I run the installer with the above options I get the standard installer dialog prompting me for the location I would like VAX installed to.
Sorry for the edits, been updating/testing on the fly.
Thanks, Craig |

baker1975 you will have problems installing VA silently or manually if there is no installed IDE. The IDE needs to be installed first, so that VA can add its self to the IDE.

Hi, we deploy the software using an unattended, automated installation tool, and for the install command we've been using a single user license, the same for each install. Although we buy separate licenses each time a new install is required, we don't want to go to the extra admin cost of updating the installation package for each deployment. It seems now, that this single user license that has been installed on multiple machines has become invalid. We have lots and lots of other single user licenses, but we don't want to have to put those codes into each and every machine as this would obviously be very time consuming. I can't find a way of automating the install of a new license, without first manually uninstalling.
Therefore, my question is, is there a way to do an unattended uninstallation? although, there was previously (where it was an MSI installation with /x and GUID. The installer now only seems to leave a uninstall.exe behind which doesn't appear to accept any silent switches at all.. |

Unfortunately there is no automated uninstall, and for VS2010 the IDE requires that you uninstall VA from inside the IDE, not from a separate uninstaller, further complicating matters. However you can change the license key on an installed version of VA, so hopefully this will help. |

Hi,
We've been using the silent install previously with VS2005 to install and enter the license information automatically for our engineers especially to setup new PCs.
However with VS2010 this appears to no longer enter License Info automatically. The silent install does setup Visual Assist for VS2010 Pro but then the engineers have to manually enter our license info when they start VS2010.
Did these options change or are no longer supported with the universal installer? Great tool btw! |
