I have the Startup->Automatically check for new versions UNCHECKED and I have had VA inform me that a new version is currently available. Right in the middle of a debug session which was super-annoying.

The IDE can also check for updates. Can you please check if the following setting is disabled?

Tools -> Options... -> Environment -> Extensions and Updates -> Automatically check for updates

Sorry - a change was made between builds 2001 and 2007 that causes the check to occur in some circumstances.
It will be fixed in the next build. case=79654
