I just downloaded 1929 and installed it. For some reason seems to have uninstalled itself and when you try to reinstall, it says it's going to integrate into VS2010, starts extracting and in about 1 second terminates and says install is complete and successful. It does not show up in Win7's installed programs list.

Any ideas? Can I get it back to where it was? I didn't have time for problems but I upgraded because VAX rarely seems to give problems in updates. I am not blaming this on anything but its gone and I would like to get it back.

Thanks,
Jim

Going back to 1925 gives the same behavior. Its gone and can't be installed. Can't find the text wholetomato in the registry.

Weird. I am working on a VM but have made upgrades before. It has had a crash today before the upgrade but it was recovered by normal windows restart.

Ok, update, installing 1925 install behavior acts the same but it does come up in Visual Studio 2010 normally with VAssistX menu whereas it did not with 1929. I went and reinstalled 1929 and again it is a no show. So there appears to be a problem with 1929 installing. That's about all I can help you with right now. Sorry.

What OS are you using? Is this 32bit or 64bit?

For VS2010 and above, VA does not show up in Windows Control Panel, since Microsoft have changed how extensions work in these IDE's. You need to look in:

IDE tools menu -> Extension Manager...

can you please look and see if VAssist X is listed in this dialog, with VA 1929?

If VA is listed, is it disabled?

Do you have:

IDE tools menu -> Options -> Extension Manager -> Load per user extensions when running as administrator

turned On or Off? If this is turned Off, does turning it On make any difference?

Hi feline,

I am using Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1. Below is the system information for visual studio. Using it on VMWare 8.0.2 build-591240.

VAX does NOT show up in the install addins when 1929 is installed. It also does not have the VAssistX Menu appearing. If I simply go back to 1925 both the menu returns and the component shows up in the gallery. Below is my VS info.

This is a very repeatable process. Click on 1929 -> install says it installed ok but "nota". Click on 1925 -> install says it installed ok and did. Repeat, Rinse....

Regards,
Jim

First a stupid question. Are you running the VA install and loading VS2010 as the same user? VA is installed on a per-user basis in VS2010 and above. Since VA 1925 is working I assume you are, but something strange is going on here.

Can you please open your temp directory, "Windows Key + R" and %TEMP% will take you straight there.

Now delete everything the system will let you delete from this directory. On my test system there is a single txt file that Window's won't let me delete.

Now run the VA 1929 installer, selecting to just install for VS2010. When you get the "installation complete." message do NOT accept it right away. Go to the %TEMP% directory where you should see a file called "VaXSetup.vsix" with a file size 6,226 KB, and several files called "VSIXInstaller_*.log"

Please make a copy of these files before accepting the message. The .vsix file is removed when accepting the message.

Has the install worked this time? Did clearing out your %TEMP% directory make any difference?

If VA is still not installed, please run the .VSIX file you copied. This is the VS2010 and above installer. Do you get any error messages? Any suggestion of problems? For me the install finishes with a message that "Your extension has been successfully installed. Please close and restart all target applications for changes to take effect."

No joy and the suggestion feline. What is strange is that VA does not appear in the Programs and Settings at all. Ok, so if I run 1925 it works, if I run 1929 it disappears i can go back and forth, virtual instantaneous updates but 1925 always appears and 1929 never appears.

Do you have any older IDE's installed, or just VS2010 and above? If you only have VS2010 and above then Visual Assist X will never show up in the Windows control panel -> Programs and Settings. This is by design, due to how extensions now work in VS2010 and above.

Extensions are now listed and managed inside the IDE, in the Extension Manager dialog, on a per-user basis.

Lets try something a little different. This FAQ entry explains which directory VA is installed to:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W282

with VA 1925 installed can you check that you can find the VS2010 install directory please.

Now install VA 1929 over the top of VA 1925, and have another look for the install directory. If VA is using a hashed directory name the hashed name may have changed.

How many VA install directories are you finding? There should only be one, but since things are going wrong, there may be a different number. In each install directory please look for the file "extension.vsixmanifest" and open it in a text editor. Line 6 gives the version number, what version does it show?

In VS2010 please go into:

IDE tools menu -> Extension Manager...

and if VA is listed, uninstall it. You might need to go back to VA 1925 to do this. Does the VA install directory disappear? Are you seeing any traces of VA under the VS2010 extensions directory?

If there are install directories and signs of VA left over after uninstalling this might be a factor.

Actually with 1925 currently installed there are indeed TWO version number folders in the %USERPROFILE%\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\VisualStudio\\10.0\\Extensions\\Whole Tomato Software\\Visual Assist X\\ path.

One is "10.7.1925.0" and the other is "10.7.1929.0". The 1929 does not have a extension.vsixmanifest. The 1925 has a manifest and line six is:

<Version>10.7.1925.0</Version>

Now, if I install 1929, then the 1929 folder DOES have a extension.vsixmanifest and line six is:

<Version>10.7.1929.0</Version>

Now, I have fixed it (unfortunately) by deleting the 1929 witch 1925 installed and started VAX, then exit, reinstall 1929. At that point it starts working as expected where there are the two folders UNTIL VS starts and a project is loaded, and the other (no longer installed) is deleted by VS regardless of if it is a higher version or not.

So, what I expect...is there is a way to get an installation botched because of two ways to install. I have had problems with Extension Manager when I had a firewall setup on my local machine, it failed during automatic downloads and that may have created this state where 1929 will never properly register itself as the current version so 1925 could be deleted. Having two versions in there, with this state seemed to keep the Extension Manager/Addin service from loading the VAX. Installing 1925 worked, installing 1929 did not, no matter how many times I installed back and forth, reinstalled the same version, etc.

I wish I could tell you how it gets into that state. Perhaps installing by running the vsix file versus downloading and installing through Extension Manager versus a failed install because it did not make a good network connection.

Sorry, but since it is fixed, I can't help you figure out what was wrong .

But, the good news for me is that I am up and running with 1929.

I had a feeling when they added two ways to update using extension manager and package files that there might be troubles like this down the road for addin makers. At least growing pains. It was an awfully aggressive addition to Visual Studio to try to manage add ins this way. I guess I am amazed it works as good as it does this soon after introduction.

Anyway, thanks feline. You guys sure do respond and work these problems. You write good code and are very customer centric so customers love staying with you. How you treat your customers is all you as a person can control these days. Its always going to be the same with my customers too. I might not be able to keep them forever, but it won't be from a lack of me trying.

It IS appreciated.

Kind regards,
Jim

Thank you for the update, and I am glad this is now working for you Like you, I have no idea how your system ended up in this state, but I don't think anyone else has reported a problem quite like this, so hopefully this was a one off problem for you. At least it was a fairly easy fix, when we figured out what to do.

Customer support and satisfaction is very important to us. We cannot fix all of the problems, but we always try, even if it does take a while
