When I alt-g a header name in Visual Studio 2012 it opens the header pinned to the right side of the screen, i.e. not grouped with my other source files on the left.

If I shift-alt-o to open a header it is grouped with my other source files on the left as expected.

Is there a way to change this behavior?

It turns out this is due to VS2012's new preview tab feature, which is explained here:

https://blogs.msdn.com/b/zainnab/archive/2012/06/19/visual-studio-2012-new-features-preview-tab.aspx?Redirected=true

it makes some sense to use the preview tab for Alt-g.

This FAQ entry, which I have just added, explains how to turn this off:
