=========
Settings for colors (I haven't tried other settings) are not obeyed, the default colors are used. Turning on and off does not help. Restarting VS does not help. Resetting colors in Tools/Options/Environment does not help. Happened after our support team asked me to enter the same license key again.

Does anyone know what is going on or how I could fix this? I have to use VS in Blue mode which is a strain on the eyes. I normally use Dark mode.

Hello wwolf,

If you modify the colors in the (Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors) menu, and disable Visual Assist, do the colors appear normally?

As in, do your color settings work without Visual Assist enabled (like highlight color)?

Yes, the Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors settings do work.

So, the settings in (VAssistX->Visual Assist Options->Coloring and Attributes) are not respected?

When you modify the color for "Classes, structs..." in the 'Coloring and Attributes' menu, and select OK, the color of classes remains Gold (the default)?

My default is Blue. Changing it to a lighter shade of Blue (and OK-ing) seems to do nothing.

Oh yes, on the Blue theme the default is blue. And modifying it does not produce any changes in the color of classes etc.?

I am on the Dark theme.

No, changing it does not seems to make any changes in appearance of the code. I have already brute force uninstalled (registry cleaned by hand, binaries removed) and then reinstalled and it still does not work. :(

BTW the same issue persists with the indicator. The setting on which column it is seems to work, but the color remains Black even thought I have set it to FFC0C0. Needless to say black on dark bg is nearly invisible.

That is not easy to see.

The color settings in the (Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors) mirror the settings in Visual Assist.

If you could please navigate to the (Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors) menu and check the color for VA Class (and others, such as VA Column Indicator) and ensure they are what you expect.

They should be the same as what you see in the (VAssistX->Visual Assist Options->Coloring and Attributes) menu.

Are you using any plugins besides Visual Assist on your IDE?

If you modify the VA Class, or VA Column Indicator colors from the (Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors) menu, are those settings respected?

The Tools menu has "Extensions" and "Add-ins". Which one do you mean when you say Plug-in?

Yes, changing the colors from Tools works.

That's some good news at least! We have a workaround.

The easiest way to send me a list of your currently installed extensions, is to use (Help->About Microsoft Visual Studio->Copy Info). Then, you can paste the info here.

Thank you, I can use this list to check for comparability issues.

At least one extension in that list has a known (minor) comparability issue with Visual Assist.

Before we check to see if this is being caused by another extension, could you please try the following.
- Navigate to the (Tools->Options->Fonts and Colors) menu
- Ensure 'Show settings for' is set to 'Text Editor'
- Click Use Defaults
- Click OK
- Restart Visual Studio

Are you able to set the Enhanced Syntax colors through Visual Assist using the following menu now?
(VAssistX->Visual Assist Options->Coloring and Attributes)

related thread: http://forums.wholetomato.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11659

I should mention that the issue in the related thread was fixed. However, the workaround used in that thread seems to also work for you. That makes me wonder. For them, it was not an issue with incompatible extensions.

The workaround I mention is setting the VA* colors directly through the (Tools->Options->Fonts and Colors) menu.

You say this began when your support team asked you to re-enter your Visual Assist license. Perhaps more information about what was happening before this started can help us get a reproduction of your issue.

Okay, well I'm going to give reproduction a shot with your plugins and see if we can get anything. Would you be willing to send me a copy of your exported Visual Studio settings, as well as your exported Visual Assist settings?

For Visual Studio, Tools->Import and Export Settings
For Visual Assist, VAssistX->Visual Assist Options->Performance->Export

You can send those files to us using the support form at the following link.
http://wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

Please mention TOPIC_ID=12776 in the subject.

I'll also see if this could be related to the fixed issue in the other thread, just in case. Until then, the workaround should allow you to adjust the Visual Assist color settings.

Hello wwolf,

Unfortunately I'm having trouble reproducing this.

You say the color settings in Tools match the color settings found in VAssistX. If you modify the colors in the VAssistX menu they do not change, but the changes are reflected in Tools? But, if you modify the colors in Tools, they DO change, is that correct?

Another user reported this issue.

They installed the following extension:
https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/9e08e5d3-6eb4-4e73-a045-6ea2a5cbdabe

Then, they used the extension to set the colors to the same default 'Dark' setting. Apparently this caused the color settings in Visual Assist to become responsive again.

Hopefully this is helpful for you as well.

My Visual Assist keeps updating itself to the latest version and then refuse to run. I install build 2112, next time I start Visual Studio it is on 2114 again. I have to reinstall 2112 every timer I restart VS.

What version of Visual Studio is this happening on? Visual Studio 2015 has a somewhat aggressive update policy known to cause this issue.

The workaround with the extension seems to work. Thank you. Now I would need to find out how to keep VAX on build 2112 until our licensing department acquires the new license.

I use Visual Studio 2013. VAX is installed for 2015 as well, but I don't use 2015 (only very rarely, and haven't used it for months). Nothing asks for permission to update. I have not downloaded and installed the update. Quite annoying.

Visual Studio handles the automatic updating of Visual Assist.

Visual Assist itself will only ever show you a notification that a new build is available, with a link to the latest download page.

Because of this, I think Visual Studio 2015 is somehow to blame even though it hasn't been run. Especially since this is the behavior I would expect from its update policy.

Please see the following page, especially the section titled 'Reverting to an old Version of Visual Assist' and 'Visual Studio 2015'.
