I have fast SSD and want to allow Visual Assist to use it for any caches etc it generates.
1. Is there a setting for caches
2. Would it actually help speed up Visual Assist

You can use this setting to change where VA stores its database:

this might speed VA up, but I would not expect it to have a major effect. It depends what the bottleneck is. A big operation is parsing all of your code, but the stable include directories are only parsed occasionally. If you have a large solution, then parsing it on load takes time, but this is only partly bound by hard drive access, it is also bound by CPU.
If you are using the SSD as your boot drive, then the VA database should already be using the SSD. |

Hey thanks for the link. Boot drive isn't SSD, neither the default locations listed therein.
I applied the changes and set the cache to the new SSD location. Of course I haven't done a quantitative measurement, but it already *feels* faster. Or rather, it looks like it reparsed entire stable and custom directories in a flash. Thanks!
One thing though, and this could be considered a bug, I lost all my custom snippets when I did the switch (yes, I closed all IDE's, edited the registry, then opened VS) |

Which IDE and OS are you using? Your custom VA snippets should still be in the directory:
%APPDATA%\\VisualAssist\\Autotext\
can you please look in this directory and see if you have any .TPL files?
Changing the setting should have no effect on this, so I am not sure what happened here. |

Thanks, I checked, indeed the TPL files are still there in the %APPDATA% (old default database location). But VA is apparently not using these with the changed database location. Copying the tpl over to the new location brought them back.

I am glad the solution was so simple, once you knew what to do, and apologies for the inconvenience caused. I have put in a feature request to copy across the current Snippets when using this setting, and moving the VA symbol database to a new location:
