I wasn't able to reproduce this problem here. Can you please export your Visual Studio and Visual Assist settings and send them in?

To export Visual Assist X settings:
VA Options -> Performance -> Export

To export Visual Studio settings:
Options -> Import and Export Settings... -> Export selected environment settings

You can use the following form to send the files in:
http://www.wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

Please include the URL of this topic in the description field so we can match it up.

Hopefully, if I import your settings there, I will be able to reproduce the problem.

I got your settings, thank you. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reproduce this problem. Can you please try creating a new test project to see if the problem happens there? Do you use any other Visual Studio extensions? It may have an impact on this problem.

Also, can you please try the following?

- Start VS2012 RTM.
- Disable VA in extension manager. (Tools -> Extensions and Updates)
- Restart.
- Enable VA in extension manager.
- Restart.

Some unusual coloring problem might happen if VS2012 RC was installed prior to the installation of VS2012 RTM and the above should fix it.

After disabling/enabling it looks better. However, custom colors persist under highlights, while Visual Studio resets colors to white under breakpoint and to black under current statement. I like this behavior. Could VA do the same?

Visual Assist should not change the behavior, and this is kind of strange, because Visual Studio also keeps colors under selection by default. I did a Google search and I see colors on the screenshots:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/zainnab/archive/2012/06/28/visual-studio-2012-new-features-code-clone-analysis.aspx

I also see colors with your settings even with uninstalled Visual Assist, so something odd is going on.
