Since upgrading to the current newer VAX Beta*, the "Find Synbols" Dialog often remains empty.
Sometimes, closing and reopening after the scan completes helps.
Entering a search term, changing the options doesn't help. The same happens in VA View for "Symbols in Solution".
Other features don't seem to be affected, e.g. The "List Methods in current file File" combo box, "go to definition" and "Find References" is always available, also Files in Solution is available.

*currently 10.7.1908. The Problem started with an earlier beta roughly a month ago, I hadn't updated for a few months.
The problem occurs on two machines, one is Visual Studio Standard 2008 (9.0.30729.1 both without patching and after applying SP1 and all current patches. The other machine is VS 2008 Pro, IIRC with SP1) |

Can you please try rebuilding the symbol databases to see if it helps?
VA Options -> Performance -> Rebuild

What do you mean by scan? If you see something in the status bar, what is the text exactly?
Does it only happens when you open the dialog right after the solution has been opened? |

Hi accord,
Scan = "VAX: Parsing <file>", then "VAX: Sorting...", then "Ready" (probably VS prompt). Nothing out of ordinary.
Multiple times I've tried Rebuild + Clear, then closing + reopening Visual Studio. (Last time right now, to watch the parsing).
I reinstalled, the beta, then reinstalled the general release (1906), and I am still running into this problem.
The other machine doesn't seem to be affected anymore - so it's possible I mixed up the two, and it is indeed only this one.
So it looks like a problem on my end. This installation isn't the freshest, but still running fine.
Any suggestions what I could try (short of reinstalling Visual Studio?)
[edit] I just realized If I disable "Show only Symbols defined in the current solution", The list contains all symbols. That makes me only half-happy because obviously the list it very crowded and not always as responsive as I like it :)
I've recreated the solution (deleted .sln and .suo, created an empty solution and added the two existing projects to it), but this doesn't help.

Can you please try what happens if you create a clean new test project? Does this problem happens there as well?
Is this solution used on the other computer as well? (where the problem doesn't happen anymore)
I'm tried to see whether your project or your environment (e.g. VS settings) contains something that causes the problem. |
