Can this be done without going through the VA Options dialog? Some registry setting to change, or some file to erase?...

You could specify the directory that holds the VA database, which will make it easier to locate:

You can delete the version.dat file in the data\vs1x_x directory. You could simply delete the vs1x_x directory. But in either case, you have to find the directory, which Visual Studio sort of impedes because it uses a hash as a directory in the path of the extension installation directory.
