This has happened twice in the past four days. It does not happen regularly, and I can find no discernible pattern. In this particular case I had just opened the editor, applied two changes which affected at least one header file and one cpp file, pressed Ctrl+Z to undo them, and then began manually typing. When I did, it went to white like this.

Thank you for your kind words, it is good to know that VA is actually working well and making a positive difference to you

We have indeed had the plugins discussion before, and sadly my answer has to remain the same. We are constantly working to improve, enhance and extend VA though, which should go some way towards helping.

If I don't say it often enough ... I really do appreciate Visual Assist X. I recommend it to everyone, and I can't imagine using Visual Studio without it. The only thing I wish you supported were plugins to allow custom things to be added. But, we've had that discussion a time or two before. :-)

It is certainly strange, and I don't think I have ever seen anything like this myself. It seems logical this is somehow related to being inside a VM, and available resources.

Hopefully this will stay rare, and not cause you any problems.

Well I monitored the CPU for a while and it never got above 15% or so except when I was compiling. And, the error didn't happen any further on continued development.

It is always sporadic. It seems when it happens once it will happen again, but I only see it once every couple of weeks at most, and it may be that I only see it in my Windows Server 2003 VM. Don't know for sure, but I do know that is where I have seen it. I can't remember if I've seen it in my Win7 VM. Nothing leaps to mind anyway. :-)

I'm not too worried about it since you mentioned that VAX doesn't update the Code Definition window. And after seeing it in the solution I'm convinced it's some issue with Visual Studio running on the virtual machine. Probably some thread is running with too low a priority due to host OS's thread allocation to the VM which has its own thread allocation and scheduling, resulting in the delay. It always comes back within a few seconds ... so it's not like it's awful. It's more like, "Hey, Rick... take a break for a few seconds." :-)

I do appreciate your help. Danke! :-)

Rick C. Hodgin

A CPU monitor in both the VM and the host might be a good idea. The entire solution tab going white is even more strange. I am wondering if there is some form of system bottleneck or video driver effect at work here.

I do a lot of testing in VMware workstation, and don't get problems like this, so running in a VM does not automatically cause problems.

A virtual machine. Oracle's VirtualBox 4.3.24 for Linux 64-bit.

Something similar happened just a few minutes ago. The entire Solution tab went completely white for about five seconds. I'll see about running the cpu monitor.

Are you working locally or via some form of remote desktop?

Do you have up to date video drivers?

Your screen shot shows this effecting both the main editor window, and also the Code Definition Window. The thing is, VA is not active in the Code Definition Window, and the current line in the Code Definition Window is highlighted even when VA is not installed in VS2008.

It is possible this is related to VA's colouring in the editor window, but if so, that does nothing to explain why this is also happening outside of the editor window.

Can you try running a CPU monitor, to see if you get an unusually large CPU spike when this happens? Changing a header file can cause the IDE intellisense parser to start doing a lot of parsing, if it is a widely used header file, so that could be a factor.
