In the OFIW (and FSIW) dialogs, the highlight that shows the selected file verges on the invisible as you type. This makes it quite hard to see what you are doing, if you want to use the cursor keys to select from the last few elements.

The highlight uses the usual Windows colours when the list view has the focus. This makes me suspect that the listview lacks that style bit that keeps the highlight when it loses focus. Could this be added?

VS2008 SP1, VAX1862, Windows7 + Aero.

Different monitors can have quite a significant effect on how things look, and this is hard to handle. I work on a dual monitor system, and have the monitors set to similar brightness and contrast levels, yet still there can be a noticeable change in how things look as you move them from one monitor to the other.

So I am quite aware of this effect myself, and sympathetic to it. Trying to find a good solution is not always so easy though. You can move full focus into the file list in OFIW, and it needs to be clear when you have done this, since then typing no longer goes to the filter field.

After some experimentation, it seems like this is a combination of particular monitors and my laptop. On my desktop PC, the highlight is quite visible.

Even if VAX didn't use the LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS bit, I don't think it could be blamed for this.

The listbox behaviour seems to be "normal" Windows behaviour. This is a screen shot of the open file dialog from notepad, under Windows XP with the green theme:

Is the highlight line that hard to pick out on your system? Do you have the same problem in other dialogs that have a listbox that looses focus?

Not a great solution, I don't think, because 3D Objects Colour 1 affects just about everything. I set it to the same orange colour as my highlight colour, and everything instantly looked awful. Even darkening it a bit just makes a big mess.

Looks like the OFIW list view already has the LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS style bit set, though, so perhaps this is a new Windows 7 'thing' and there's nothing more VAX can do. Maybe I will try going back to Classic view when I have a bit of time to try it out.

The pale "current line" in the Open File in Solution dialog highlight colour is picked up from the OS settings. Under Windows 7:

Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Personalization -> Change the theme -> Window Color -> Advanced appearance settings... -> Item in the drop down list = "3D Objects" -> Color 1

So you can change this to be a more visible colour if this helps.
