It would be great if Visual Assist X would use the classical icon style in its toolbar when installed on IDEs like VS2008 or VS2010, and the flat icon style when installed in VS2013, for coherence with the style of the hosting IDE.

Thank you very much.

You make a good point, but unfortunately this is not something we can easily do. The same dll is used for VS2010 and above, and only gets to provide a single set of icons for all of these IDE's. We cannot even do something clever with the installer, since the installer for VS2010 and above is just a zip file. So for now manually updating the pkgdef file is the best solution I can offer.

Thanks for the information. I believe it would make sense to use the older (i.e. non-flat) icon style also for VS2010, since VS2010's built-in icons are non-flat.

(Instead, the "flat" style started with VS2012.)

We are using the older style of icons in VS2008 and earlier. If you want to change the toolbar icons in VS2010 or VS2012 to use the older style then you can do this. First close the IDE you want to update, and locate VA's install directory. This FAQ entry will help you find where VA is installed:

http://docs.wholetomato.com/default.asp?W449

you want to be in the directory holding "autotext", not actually in the "latest" directory.

Now open the file "VAX.pkgdef" in a text editor.
Remove the word "Metro" from line 9 and save/close the file. (so we're loading a different dll, VaPkgUI.dll instead of VaPkgUIMetro.dll)

Now load the IDE and you should have the old style toolbar icons.
