For about two weeks now I have somewhat regular crashes when I close VS 2008. I did install a new application but it's not running and it's not related to VS in any way.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a C# console application project.
2. Add some code to the Main() function.
3. Set a breakpoint on one of the code lines.
4. Start the project with F5 for debugging.
5. When the project breaks into the debugger, stop debugging (Shift+F5 I believe).
6. Close VS 2008.

At this point, VS 2008 crashes. If I disable VAX, the problem doesn't happen. It also doesn't happen if I simply open a project but don't run it.

Is there any other information that I can send? I didn't see a .dmp file under C:\\Windows\\Minidump or under the VAX folders under Users\\<my user>\\...

Glad to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to capture the dumps and submit them.

I installed build 1937 and the problem seems to be gone now. I'll test it a bit more and update this message if I run into more crashes. Thank you very much for the quick action.

macross, have you seen any further crashes since? Are you seeing any other odd problems, perhaps the IDE hanging on exit? I am wondering if this was a one off, nasty problem, or if there is something regular happening here.

Reason being that the same dll (VaPkg.dll) is on the top of the call stack at the time of the unhanded exception.

Repro wasn't possible as the crash came out of the blue.

Cheers.

gbozoki can you please close your IDE, then look for and delete the .NCB file in the root directory of your solution. Occasionally a corrupt .NCB file can cause problems, and the IDE will simply recreate this file if you delete it.

As a second test, inspired by the uninstall / reinstall helping briefly, can you please press the button:

VA Options -> Performance -> Rebuild symbol databases

and restart your IDE. Both hopefully fairly quick tests, and they might just help.

Actually, my issue is back - I'll update the message that says reinstalling helps.

Accord,

Thank you - let me know when you have the test build ready, I should have time to install it.

Edit: reinstallation did not resolve the problem.

Uninstalling, reinstalling VAX and then restoring my saved VAX settings fixed the problem for now. I don't know what may have caused it.

I use highly customized IDE and VAX settings - let me know if you need my exported settings for either to reproduce the problem.

Accord,

Thank you for your response. I uploaded 3 dump files in a .zip file; the file name is VAXCrash_TopicID_11368.zip.

I'll see if uninstalling / reinstalling VAX fixes the problem - this only started happening ~2 weeks ago but I can't recall any major system changes other than some system updates and that one installed application (which is actually 2, Rhino 3D v5 and Flamingo nXt - both are unrelated to VS or VAX).
accord Posted - May 16 2013 : 08:23:49 AM
I wasn't able to reproduce your problem using VA 1936 and VS2008.
Can you please save out a minidump file and send it in? The following guide will help how to do that:
http://docs.wholetomato.com?W303

You can send the minidump in using the following form:

Please paste the URL of this topic to the description field so we can match it up.
