It has the properties you are looking for: searching both files and symbols, previewing as you walk up or down the menu. It's a bit slow for my liking, but otherwise you can give it a shot.
Actually I am aware of that, but slowness is what keeps me from using it, I prefer using VA :) |

Posted - Jun 26 2018 : 9:11:10 PM The VA View clears the search result when I click on the list, is it possible to provide an option such that VA View can keep the result? Also, it'd be great if it support previewing file (a new feature introduced by VS) when using arrow key to navigate through seach result. If the file and symbol result can somehow be combined together, it'd be awesome. Otherwise, I will have to press tab key to switch to symbol search, it'd be nice if we can have a keyboard shortcut to activate VA View and set focus to symbol search. |

Posted - Jun 26 2018 : 2:11:33 PM Now that I was thinking about how a modeless open file in solution would look like, I realized that we have a feature like that. It's called VA View: https://docs.wholetomato.com/default.asp?W222
It is a tool window which is modeless, you can leave it floating or dock it. You can open files, go to symbols directly and much more. Just click into [Files in Solution], start typing and press enter, like how you would use Open File in Solution.
If you assign a keyboard shortcut to the command VAssistX.VAViewFIS, you can use it similarly to Open File in Solution: Tools... -> Environment -> Keyboard
Here, search for VAssistX.VAViewFIS by putting it to the editbox under "Show commands containing:" to find the command so you can assign a shortcut for that command.
Hope this helps. |

Would you also expect the dialog to be modeless? Or it would already have added value even if it stays modal?
A modeless window would be even better! I would expect this can save me from opening the dialog repeatedly, like, when I don't have the exact symbol/file name in mind. |

You can select more than one items and VA will open them all.
Ctrl+click to select individual items. Shift+click to select a range of files. Or maybe the most convenient of all, just press shift+down to select multiple files via keyboard.
Hope this helps.
I am aware of this, but oftentimes I just want to open the file and peek at the code quickly and might decide its not what I am looking for, then I would really like the dialog doesnt close itself in this case. I would suggest adding Ctrl+Double click or Ctrl+Enter to open selected symbols/files without closing the dialog. |
