Is it possible to enable this? It was so useful in the earlier version, and in the latest it is gone.

There are two different set of navigation commands: a Visual Assist and a Visual Studio system:

As you can see in the feature column, they have different feature set and Visual Assist's version don't support restoring column position.
I think that what's happened is that you used to have Visual Studio's bindings.

To change this, you need to bind View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateForward to alt+left and alt+right here:
Tools -> Options... -> Environment -> Keyboard
