Visual C++ 2005 SP1, Intel Parallel Studio 2011 Beta and VAX 1823.

This week I started working again on a C++ project after a few months of not touching VC++. All of a sudden VAX is giving me problems with highlighting, suggestions and... well... everything I use of it.

When I open a source file it is highlighted, I get VAX comboboxes, suggestions... the whole deal. If I switch to another editor, or if I check the messages pane or such, once I get back to the editor I was working on, all highlighting is gone, there are no suggestions and even sometimes both VAX comboboxes disappear (there is still room for them, but they are not there). When the comboboxes remain they become useless (no Context information at all).

I tried by installing a previous version of VAX, but it caused the same problems.

If I close the current editor and re-open the file, everything works again... until I move somewhere else and come back to it.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Paul.

I have the log files, thank you for these. Hopefully they will help, or at least tell us what tests to run:

The first time i tried this, VAX worked without any trouble. I restarted VS2008 a couple of times but was unable to trigger the error. Then I ran the Intel Amplifier XE in VS once and VAX started acting weird again, even after re-starting. I have sent the log files from when it did not work and entered this forum thread ID in the request. Hope it can give some clues...

Sure, I will do that, hopefully in a couple of days.

With both VA and Parallel studio installed, can you please run the following test.

Load a single instance of VS2008, but do not load any solution.
Now turn on VA logging:

VA Options -> Performance -> Enable logging

now load your main solution, and after VA has finished parsing open VA's Open File dialog, to confirm the problem is happening.
Now close the IDE, to stop the VA log files from getting to large.

Can you please send me the log files. Hopefully they will offer some clues as to the nature of the problem. Please see this FAQ for details of turning on VA's logging, and sending us the log files

Hi again. Sorry about not replying faster. Doing this kind of testing takes a lot of time as I have to exit all VS2008 instances, re-install Paralell studio, do the tests and then uninstall it again as i cannot work without VAX. The latest results:

Creating a new solution seems to work. I added 10 files and all showed up in VAX when I opened it even if none of them were open in the editor when the solution was opened, even if I re-started VS in between. I then switched to the solution where I'm having trouble and the error started showing: The files that are currently open in the editor show up in the VAX dialog as well as the files from the previous test solution. If I enable "Show only files in the current solution", then only the files from the previous solution are shown and none from the current one so something has stopped VAX from switching to the current solution altogether. It is still using the previous one.

I should also add that I tried to convert this solution to VS2010 and there I had no problems with VAX but unfortunately there are other issues stopping me from using VS2010.

In VA's Open File dialog, do you have "Show only files in the current solution" turned On or Off? What effect, if any, does changing this setting have?

Can you please create a new, default solution, and see if all of the files are shown in VA's Open File dialog? I am wondering if this is somehow a solution specific problem, or if it is effecting every solution.
nahoj84 Posted - Jun 13 2012 : 02:42:11 AM
Yes, I'm quite sure it was the files that were open when I loaded the solution that were listed. All of them were visible when I looked in the solution explorer.

I am running C++ but the .sln/.vcproj files did not change. Maybe Intel is doing something to them on the fly but the files themselves did not change and I saw nothing unusual in the solution explorer.

Do the files listed in VA's Open File dialog happen to be open when you load the solution?
Are all of the files listed correctly in the IDE Solution Explorer window?

This sounds almost like VA is having a problem understanding the solution or project files for your main solution. That could happen if something has changed in these files recently.

I am assuming you are working in C++. If you are using source control, can just do a quick check and see if your .SLN or .VCPROJ files have changed recently?

Do you know if you are still using .SLN and .VCPROJ files, or some other type of Intel specific project or solution file?

I'm on Win7 64bit (but of course VS is 32 bit). The problem is triggered as soon as I open a solution if Paralell studio is installed. Only 10-20 files (out of 3000 in the solution) are visible in "Open file in solution" and only those files seem to be scanned for syntax highlighting.

I checked for updates on paralell studio, it says that the Composer XE component can be updated, but it does not fix this problem. I'm not sure of this, but it seems that this problem started when I entered the license for Paralell studio as I had also been running the trial for some time without problems.

Which OS are you using?

How are you triggering this problem? So far I cannot reproduce this problem using a trial of the latest version of Parallel studio, which says it is update 3.

I have been testing under winXP 32bit.

Hi,
I'm seeing this issue with the latest C++ Parallel studio XE (sp1, Update 2), VAX 10.6.1827 and VS 2008 SP1.

I uninstalled all Intel products and it worked again, then I re-installed Parallel studio and VAX stopped working. Is there anything more I can do to troubleshoot this problem? I would really want to have both installed at the same time.

The problem is fixed in Parallel Studio 2011 RTM.

Thanks for everyone's help.

This is currently being looked at. It seems that VA and Parallel Composer are clashing when trying to interact with the IDE:

case=46226

Unfortunately no estimate on when this will be fixed yet.

I gave Intel Parallel Studio 2011 Beta with Parallel Composer update 2 in Visual Studio 2010 a try, and everything works as expected. However, in Visual Studio 2005 the problem remains.

Have you managed to find what is causing this behavior in older versions of Visual Studio?

We have it installed and are looking into the problem...

Confirmed the same - I uninstalled Intel Parallel Studio 2011 and VAX worked fine. Since I can't live w/o VAX :), I rolled back to the previous version of Parallel Studio. I am going to post this issue to the Intel Parallel Studio 2011 Beta channel (wherever it is). I will follow-up when I have some information.

I can confirm that by removing Intel Parallel Studio 2011 Beta and re-installing the current release version again the problem is solved. I will just have to abstain from using IPS 2011 until VAX is guaranteed to work with it.

Have you succeeded in getting access to the Beta?

No, I did not. At first I thought it was AutomatedQA's integration with Visual Studio, but removing it did not solve the problem. I thought the problem could be caused by Intel Parallel Studio 2011 then, but I was not completely sure and I did not want to uninstall it either.

I hope you guys be able to find what is causing this strange behavior.

If you can't get access, I can give you my information to download.

Thanks!

Downloaded the release and it seems to work fine. Now trying to get access to their beta program...

Thanks, we are downloading Parallel Studio to test...

I have the same issue. Visual Studio 2008 SP1, VAX 1823, AND Intel Parallel Studio 2011 Beta.

I also tried reinstalling VAX but problem is still there.

It looks to be a problem with Parallel Studio 2011 Beta - which I actually don't want to uninstall...

Did you post to the Parallel Studio Beta site?
